Learn to make an upcycled magazine collage from beginning to end. Immerse yourself in your favorite colors and create the piece you want to make. I'll guide you as you choose to follow my sample in a short workshop or create your own original design in a multi-week class.

There's only one rule: NO JUDGEMENT.

What a delight to forget about the stress of the day, roll up our sleeves and create something. Greatly enjoyed the process and went out and got magazines to continue enjoying this outlet. Looking forward to the next workshop.

Introduction to collage:
use what you’ve got

October 8 - November 12, 10-12 pm (Tuesdays)
Farmstead Arts Center, Basking Ridge, NJ

In this class, we will explore the artistic potential of materials in our environment, namely the recycling bin. Students will investigate how the artistic process changes when the palette comes from found magazines, and how to view limits as opportunities. How do we have to consider color, texture, shading and composition differently when we can only use what we have in front of us? All levels welcome.

Painting with paper: magazine paper collage

October 19 - November 23, 9:30-12 pm (Saturdays)
Center for Contemporary Art, Bedminster, NJ

The steps are pretty simple...sketch, find paper, rip it, glue it, make art. But it's in the doing that the magic happens. Students will work with recycled magazines and serendipity. We will shift our perspective from 'what to do next' to 'what's possible' as we sift through the vibrant colors and lush textures of our salvaged magazines. Working freehand we'll experience the freedom of artistic expression as we rip and glue our bits of found treasure into representational art. Not only will you improve your understanding of color, balance, and emphasis through this unconventional medium, you will also have a new appreciation for what you can create with what you find around you.

Painting with paper: magazine paper collage

October 25 - November 15, 10:30-12:30 pm (Fridays)
Montclair Adult School, Montclair Public Library, Montclair, NJ

In this class, we'll be making a holiday themed collage from magazines. The images will be scanned, digitized and printed as holiday cards. Professional scanning, 10 cards with envelopes, and a high resolution file are included in the materials fee. The class includes discussion about creating artwork for reproduction, print-on-demand, and the limits of digitally reproducing artwork. This is a 4-week class, so we must work quickly. The first class includes an evaluation of which images work for this medium. Please bring several holiday images that you would like to work from to the first class (these do not need to be winter holiday-themed, just anything you would like to have as a card), and bring a flash drive to the third class.

What a wonderful night creating art together! I felt a little uncertain, not considering myself particularly artistic - but I loved selecting colors and textures for my collage, and ended up being very proud of my creation. It makes a wonderful night for any group - I would happily do it again!

Choosing colors, textures and patterns for my collage art project was fun, challenging, and an interesting process. I learned new techniques and came away with a piece of art!

I thoroughly enjoyed a recent collage class with Laura Shabazz. Her directions were clear and easy-to-follow, allowing us to individualize our work. Everyone in the class had a great time and was delighted with the result which was matted and framed, ready to hang!

Just attended a collage class with Laura - so much fun! She is an amazing teacher - especially loved the fact that we all left with a piece of framed artwork that looked like a professional artist created it and not a paint-by-numbers kit!
